Purpose Statement
The job of Teacher - Special Area (PE, Music, etc.) is done for the purpose/s of providing specialized, standards-based instruction in designated subject areas; adapting curriculum, materials, and instructional strategies to meet diverse student needs; supporting student academic and social growth; assessing student progress; coordinating instructional and extracurricular activities; maintaining a safe learning environment; maintaining accurate records and documentation in compliance with district and regulatory requirements; collaborating with staff and families; and participates in school-wide programs and professional development.
Essential Functions
- Adapts specialized instructional activities and materials (e.g. physical education routines, music exercises, performance tasks, ) for the purpose of accommodating diverse learning needs and supporting individualized education plans within established curriculum frameworks.
- Administers a variety of subject-specific assessments (e.g. performance tasks, skills evaluations, written tests, ) for the purpose of evaluating student competency, monitoring progress, and informing instructional decisions.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources for the purpose of improving student outcomes, supporting instructional goals, and contributing to the implementation of the school improvement plan.
- Communicates with parents and/or legal guardians regarding student progress for the purpose of sharing expectations, highlighting achievements, and supporting student improvement and reinforcement of learning at
- Coordinates a variety of instructional and extracurricular activities (e.g. performances, field trips, competitions, transportation, lesson planning, and instructional resources, ) for the purpose of ensuring the timely availability of materials, equipment, and personnel necessary to support learning in specialized subject areas and achieve established educational objectives.
- Demonstrates effective instructional methods and strategies for the purpose of delivering specialized subject content (e.g., physical education, music, arts, STEM, ), implementing curriculum and programs, and ensuring instruction is differentiated to meet individual student needs and abilities.
- Manages student behavior in specialized instructional settings (e.g. physical education, music, arts, STEM, ) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment, ensuring compliance with established guidelines and regulations, and promoting student success through positive engagement.
- Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, gymnasium, playground, field trips, performances, labs/ experiments, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a safe, structured, and positive learning environment that supports student participation in specialized instructional activities.
- Participates in a variety of meetings, professional development, workshops, conferences, and/or parent-teacher conferences for the purpose of sharing, receiving, and applying information to enhance instructional practices; supporting student learning; and contributing to school and district goals.
- Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance records, anecdotal notes, progress reports, ) for the purpose of documenting student growth, communicating with families, and ensuring compliance with mandated requirements.
- Provides guidance and support to students for the purpose of improving academic performance, fostering positive decision-making, and enhancing problem-solving skills that support success in specialized subject areas and overall school performance.
- Provides instruction and guided practice to students using adopted curriculum and instructional materials for the purpose of improving student learning and performance, developing interpersonal skills, and fostering subject-specific skills and competencies through a structured course of study.
- Reports and submits incidents (e.g. mandated reporting laws and district processes, fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, following tiered behavior matrix, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to Education Code and school
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. other teachers, parents, administrators, ) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information, and/or direction.
- Supports and collaborates with classroom teachers and instructional staff for the purpose of enhancing instructional practices, coordinating curriculum alignment, sharing resources, and ensuring continuity between special area instruction (e.g., PE, music, arts, STEM, etc.) and general education learning environments.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of instructional activities and learning environments.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applicable codes, policies, regulations, and laws; age-appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; curriculum and instruction of subject areas; instructional strategies and methods; assessment and evaluation techniques; technology integration; stages of child development; classroom and behavioral management strategies; and professional ethics and responsibilities.
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment, including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; differentiating instruction; implementing the curriculum; using assessment data to inform and adjust instruction; managing student behavior and maintaining a safe, positive learning environment; ensuring student safety during instruction, activities, and equipment use; and using appropriate verbal and written communication with students and parents.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a department, large work unit, and/or across several small work units; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment.
Experience: Job related experience within specialized field is required.
Education: Bachelors degree in job related area.
