REPORTS TO: District Health Services Manager and/or Building Principal
SPECIFIC DUTIES/TASKS INCLUDE:
- Provides basic health care/and first aid to students/staff.
- Electronically logs all student visits to the health office, recording the student’s health complaint, findings, and what care is provided to the student. Depending on student’s condition, the Health Assistant will contact parent to pick up the student if necessary or have the student return to class.
- Contact parents about all serious injuries, and anything unusual that happens to their child during the school day.
- Makes medical referrals when needed and follows up with parents to make sure that needed care has been obtained.
- Keeps Parents, Principal, Staff, and District Health Services Manager advised of any Chronic Health Conditions, or other problems the student may have.
- Notifies Parents, Principal, and District Health Services Manager when a student requires a treatment or procedure that is beyond their training or capabilities, so arrangements can be made with parent to have these services provided by the parent, or other person who has the training to perform the procedures.
- Calls EMS, 911 for all emergent injuries or health concerns.
- Administers medications to students that are provided by the parent with signed permission by the parent, and medication permission slip gives specific information about the medicine to be given.
Provides over the counter Tylenol, and Pepto Bismol to students with headaches/stomach aches/fevers/and minor pain complaints only if parent has given permission on the Students Health Questionnaire. Follows the procedures of the Medication Administration Guidelines and Procedures as set forth by District Policy.
- Documents and inputs health information into computer and keeps track of medical files including health office visits, meetings, screenings, and parental and staff contacts.
- Reviews student’s immunizations. Follows up to ensure proper immunizations are obtained before allowing student to register for school.
- Conducts student health screenings; checks vision and hearing; measures height, weight and blood pressure; completes medical records for each student; maintains strict confidentiality in dealing with student records. Makes referrals for vision, hearing, or scoliosis when screenings are failed.
- Provides educational material to students, staff and community to help promote wellness.
- Keeps inventory and orders medical supplies as needed.
- Participates and attends trainings and meetings as required.
- Follows all Child Abuse Reporting Laws, as set forth by the State of Arizona.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of general medical practices, principles and medical terminology.
- Knowledge of State and County laws, regulations and orders governing nursing practices.
- Knowledge of District policies and procedures governing student health.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of nursing instruments used to evaluate students' health.
- Skill in verbal and written communication.
- Skill in providing basic health care/first aid only within your scope of practice
- Skill in dealing with students with health complaints and other types of problems and is able to determine which issues need to refer to the District Health Services Manager, for needed assistance in resolving the issues.
- Skill in the use of a personal computer and related software.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Students, Parents, and Staff.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in an indoor environment. Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting and/or carrying up to 30 pounds. May be required to work with students with behavioral problems. Will be expected to change clothing and diapers and lift and/or transfer students from wheelchairs to special seating, as needed. May be exposed to infectious diseases and body fluid borne pathogens. Needs to be able to respond to emergencies quickly.
QUALIFICA TIONS: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Previous nursing experience preferred. Experience as a School Health Aide, Nursing Assistant, Home Health, Caregiver, EMT, Front or Back Medical Office, Medical Assistant, Lab Tech, Health Dept., Nursing Home, Assisted Living, Medication Tech, Child Day Care, Instructional Asst. or previous work in Schools or other Healthcare settings will be considered. Must possess or have the ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certification. Additional certifications may also be required as specified by the District. Fingerprint Clearance Card (IVP) required at the time of hiring.
